Southwestern Law School is located in Los Angeles and was founded in 1910. It was one of the first law schools in the nation to offer admission to large numbers of Jewish students, and the law school’s graduates include prominent Jewish lawyers such as Justice Stanley Mosk ‘35, the longest serving member in the history of the California Supreme Court, and Irwin R. Buchalter ‘33, the founder of Buchalter Nemer, one of the oldest and most respected law firms in Los Angeles.
Southwestern goes out of its way to assist frum Jewish students. While Southwestern is a secular institution, classes are always cancelled on the first day of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur – starting the evening before – and Spring Break is generally calculated to coincide with the first days of Pesach. This is very rare for universities outside of the East Coast.
In the exceptional situation where an academic event is scheduled on Shabbos, the university arranges for frum students to be able to engage in the same activity at alternative times. In past years, the Jewish Law Students Association has often arranged a daily mincha minyan.
